Engineering Mechanics is a state key specialty, which was renamed from Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering Structure Mechanics to Engineering Mechanics in the adjustment of academic disciplines in 1998. Founded in 1965, it started to enroll graduate students in 1965 and was firstly authorized to offer master’s degree and doctor’s degree. Nevertheless, it is the key constructing unit of state “211 Project”. Its subordinating giant structural laboratory is equipped with flash ranging, electrical logging, vibration & computer controlled structural dynamic & fatigue testing device, rocking testing device, etc. It presently has four doctor advisors, among which two are technical committee member of the most authoritative international organization of ship structural mechanics—the International Ship & Offshore Structure Congress.

This specialty mainly deals with the research of engineering structures’ mechanics function & designing method, involving the areas of ship and ocean engineering, aviation and spaceflight, civil construction, automobile, machine, and other aspects of traffic & transportation. It has gained many national or ministerial awards of S & T research achievement, and its research work in mechanics frontiers has reached the international level. The graduated students of this specialty mainly work in domestic or foreign research institutes and colleges as teachers or researchers, many of which have become international famous scholars.

  I. Education Goal
After graduation, students should have a solid knowledge of mathematics, fundamental theories of mechanics, and systematic specialized knowledge of international & domestic frontiers; be proficient in reading specialized documents in foreign language, and in English writing and conversation; possess the ability of working & organizing research works independently.

  II. Main Research directions
1、Theories and applications of computing structural mechanics
2、Model building of complex structures and safety analyzing
3、Technology & theories of structural experiment
4、Structure fracture, fatigue and its reliability research
  5、Structural dynamics
  6、Vibration reducing & controlling

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The duration of full-time doctor’s degree candidates is three years (altogether 17 or more credits). Semi-sabbatical doctorial graduates may prolong their schoolings by 1~2 years under permission.
