This specialty was established in 1958, and began to train the
graduate students in 1962. As a key specialty in Shanghai, it has
the right to confer master and doctor degree, and it has already set
up a post-doctor station.
The specialty is the earliest fluid mechanic center for doctors,
which is characterized by hydromechanical research in the country.
It mainly deals with research of such field of high speed hydrodynamics
on free surface, irregular aerodynamics, computational hydrodynamics,
fluid noise control, fluid dynamics of estuary and environment, etc.
It has obtained many national, provincial and ministerial prizes of
Scientific and Technological Progress. It has extensive exchanges
both at home and abroad. The specialty now has abundant teachers –
an academician and five doctoral tutors.
The specialty has a fluid dynamics laboratory with multi-functional
water troughs, small-scale low-speed wind-tunnels, gravity type vacuole,
high speed self-enclosed circulating water tunnel equipment and laser
speed testing apparatus, water noise apparatus, etc. A high-performance
parallel computation server has also been built. The specialty undertakes
forecasting research in national defense and applied research in some
key projects.
I. Training Objectives
Doctorate winners should grasp solid basic theory and systematical
specialized knowledge, and have the ability of independent scientific
research. They are able to achieve innovative results in theory, computing
technology and science and technology of fluid mechanics.

V. Middle Examinations
The integrated examination of doctoral and master-doctoral degree
candidates and the credentials affirmation of master-doctoral degree
candidates refer to “Rules on the training of graduate students studying
for a doctorate at Shanghai Jiaotong University” and “Rules on the
training of master-doctoral candidates at Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
After entering this stage, graduate students should submit a brief
summary of their half-a year work to their guide teacher by the end
of each term, reporting the progress of the thesis within the range
of the specialty.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of doctoral candidates must be finished during
the third term. The reading amount of documents is within fifty to
one hundred.
After achieving their doctor's qualification, master-doctoral degree
candidates must finish their opening report during the fifth term.
Reading amount of documents is the same as that of doctors.
At the last period of their opening report, they must have their oral
defense at a public lecture participated by experts of the specialty
or the relevant specialties.
VII. Academic Dissertation
Its details refer to the regulations about academic dissertation
of the university.
VIII. Thesis Publishing
Its details refer to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing
scientific paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
