  Marine Engine Engineering was founded in 1956, and started to enroll graduate students in 1960. It was one of the disciplines which were firstly entitled to confer master’s degree. And in 1998, it was entitled to confer doctor’s degree.

  Its main research areas are: new technology of ship propulsion system, including model building and simulation of propulsion system’s functions & other dynamic behaviors, propulsion system controlling techniques, and failure detecting techniques.

  Its Lab covers nearly a thousand square meters and has built up diesel engine & transmission machine test-bed with charge, fluid coupling device, gas & water separating device, air purifying device, and other special test-beds. Nevertheless, it was equipped with laser holographic system, single-chip simulating device, programmable logical controller, digital simulating device, and other advanced surveying device. This lab has made great achievements in the areas of dynamic model building and simulation of dynamic device, high-power fluid coupling device and other transmission devices, gas & water separation of combustion, dynamic devices controlling, and other areas.

  Recent years, Marine Engine Engineering has carried out researches of controlling & simulation of diesel propulsion system, model building and simulation of transmission’s dynamic functions, gas & water separation of marine combustion turbine etc., and its achievements have won state or Shanghai Science & Technology Progress Awards for many times.

  I. Education Goal
  After graduation, students should have a solid knowledge of marine engine engineering and automation of dynamic devices; know deeply about the present situation, developing trend & international research frontier of marine engine engineering; capable of doing scientific research of high academic and practical value independently; possess the ability of resolving key technical problems in marine engine engineering and relatively high technical management ability; be proficient at least at one foreign language, skilled at reading English specialized documents, and capable of English writing and international academic exchanging.

  III. Length of Schooling and Credits
  The duration of full-time doctor’s degree candidates is three years (altogether 17 or more credits). Semi-sabbatical doctorial graduates may prolong their schoolings by 1~2 years under permission.

  V. Mid-term Examination
  Doctor’s degree candidates will be given a comprehensive examination in the third semester, which will be carried out by the rules and process in Education Program Rules for Doctor’s Degree Candidates in Shanghai Jiaotong University.
  
  VI. Opening report
  The opening report of doctor’s degree candidates should be finished before the first half of the third semester. The amount of documents that be read is no less than fifty.
