Program ‖Solid Mechanics
This specialty began to recruit graduate students in 1963 and
doctors in 1982. It is one of the earliest specialties in the country
that had the right to award master and doctorate. In 1995 it set up
the mobile station for the post-doctors. Its teaching and scientific
research makes a remarkable achievement, and it is among the most
famous teaching and research units in the country. Now there are eleven
professors and six associate professors.
The specialty pays attention to the theoretical foundation, engineering
application and the development of cross specialties of solid mechanics.
It closely correlates the frontiers of the specialty with relevant
engineering projects in domestic economy. Based on such courses as
continuum mechanics, computational mechanics, engineering control
and mechanical properties of materials, etc., the specialty makes
a deep theoretical and practical research on such respects as mechanics
of composite materials, electromagnetic solid mechanics, computational
analysis of fracture, fatigue and structure, constitutive and macro-micro
mechanics, boundary mechanics, computational materials, carbon nanotube
mechanics, engineering structure control and trouble diagnosis.
The specialty has a solid mechanics laboratory with such advanced
equipment as loading MTS of both single and dual axles, holographic
laser, function testing of electromechanical coupling ,etc. as well
as large-scale engineering FEM analyzing software such as MSC (Patran,
Nastran, unless Dytran, Marc,Fatigue), Dets and Adams, etc. It provides
graduate students with a fine experimental and computing condition.
I. Training Objectives
To cultivate senior talents with solid basic theory and systematical
specialized knowledge of solid mechanics. These talents are supposed
to grasp one or two foreign language, and have a strong ability in
application of modern computer technology and modern experiment technology.
They can take on or organize scientific research and specialized technological
jobs independently, and make innovative results.
II. Main Research Directions
1. Evaluation for structure fracture, damage, fatigue and safety.
2. Computational materials and structure optimize design
3. Mechanics of composite materials and boundary mechanics
4. Mechanics of nanometer materials and intelligent materials
5. Constitutive theory and macro-micro mechanics
6. Stability and ramification of nonlinear system, and vibration,
control and trouble diagnosis of structure
7. Modern experimental mechanics
8. Biological and medical mechanics
III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time doctorial students’ length of schooling is 3 years.
The total credits must get requested 17 credits at least. Semi-sabbatical
doctorial students’ period of schooling can be prolonged for another
one year or two years as approved.
The master-doctors’ length of schooling is 3 years. The total credits
must get requested 47 credits at least, among them the credits for

V. Middle Examinations
The integrated examination of doctoral and master-doctoral degree
candidates and the credentials affirmation of master-doctoral degree
candidates refer to “Rules on the training of graduate students studying
for a doctorate at Shanghai Jiaotong University” and “Rules on the
training of master-doctoral candidates at Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
After entering this stage, graduate students should submit a brief
summary of their half-a year work to their guide teacher by the end
of each term, reporting the progress of the thesis within the range
of the specialty.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of doctoral candidates must be finished during
the third term. The reading amount of documents is within fifty to
one hundred.
After achieving their doctor's qualification, master-doctoral degree
candidates must finish their opening report during the fifth term.
Reading amount of documents is the same as that of doctors.
At the last period of their opening report, they must have their
oral defense at a public lecture participated by experts of the specialty
or the relevant specialties.
VII. Academic Dissertation
Refers to the regulations about academic dissertation of the university.
VIII. Thesis Publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific
paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University ".
