EducationEducation ProgramUnderwater Acoustics Engineering

Underwater Acoustics Engineering was founded in 1953, subordinating to Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, a first-grade specialty. It was entitled to confer master’s degree and doctor’s degree in 1998. Its main lab—State Key Lab of Vibration, Impact & Noise is equipped with advanced instruments of international standards, including a computer work station of high-performance, an integrated vibration/acoustics testing & analyzing system. The lab has an IF underwater sound testing system under high hydrostatic pressure, a small underwater sound pool, and some special underwater sound testing instruments. Recent years, this lab has bore a few state natural science funds and a few key project researches of national defense S & T fund. It has published many papers of high quality, and has won many prizes of ministerial or national S & T Progress Award.
This specialty presently has three doctor advisors (one is part-time) and two master advisors.

The graduated students mainly work in colleges, research institutes and high technology industries as teachers, scientific researchers or high technology researchers.

  I. Education Goal
This education program cultivates advanced underwater sound researchers of acoustics & vibration and signal processing. The degree obtainer should possess solid theoretical knowledge of acoustic and vibration; master calculating method of vibration acoustics and signal processing technique; know well of the developing directions of modern acoustics and be able to do basic work and application research of Underwater Acoustics Engineering independently. Through the doctorial study and the practice of publishing papers, the doctor degree candidates will gain the independent working ability both theoretically and practically, and make out creative research results in the area of Underwater Acoustics Engineering.

  II. Main Research Directions

  1. Ship noise and its controlling
  2. Underwater sound signal processing
  3. Underwater sound objectives features forecasting
  4. Underwater sound-latent mechanism and technology

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The duration of full-time doctor’s degree candidates is three years (altogether 17 or more credits). Semi-sabbatical doctor’s degree candidates may prolong their schoolings by 1~2 years under permission.
