This specialty is based on architectural designing, dealing with
the research of new theories, new approaches and new technologies
relating to architectural designing. The main fields of research include:
a. architectural designing and relating theories b. scenic architectural
designing and relating theories c. city designing and relating theories
d. large-scale public architecture.
The specialty now possess an architecture simulative laboratory,
an architectural multimedia laboratory and architecture laboratories,
all occupying an area of 480 sq meters. It also has nearly a hundred
of large equipments and advanced experimental apparatuses such as
figuration station. In these years, architecture exceeds other relating
specialties and has fruitful achievements. It wins many provincial
and departmental awards and has about 100 papers and several monographs
published in authoritative home and abroad publications.
I. Training Objectives
This specialty puts great emphasis upon theoretic study of basic
theories and training of originality in architectural project designing.
Masters of the specialty have well-knit basic knowledge of architecture,
strong ability of independently analyzing and solving problems in
projects, vigorous creativity in planning and nice comprehensive
abilities. They also have creativity in the fields of architecture
research, architecture designing, and project practice, as well
as a excellent mastery of English reading and writing. They are
able to adapt themselves to the advancement of architectural designing
under new situation.

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.
Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can
be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam
once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and
grades in course study meets demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished
before the end of the third term (at the latest the fourth term
after in months).
Requirements:
1. Persuasive argumentation, which is in the direction of advanced
architectural designing.
2. The content must involve the meaning of the project, the assessment
of researching achievement, the analysis of feasibility, the steps
of practical work, the arrangements of all stages of research and
detailed approaches.
The opening report must be verified by 3-5 professors or associate
professors organized by this department.
The reading amount of documents is no less than thirty-six, including
one-third of the foreign academic papers.
VII. Academic Dissertation
Refers to the regulations about academic dissertation of the university.
The research work of the thesis should innovate to some extent on
the basis of the former research. Theoretical thesis should have
the quality of being published. Designing thesis should work closely
the concrete problems in the actual engineering. The thesis must
have a topic, a catalogue, an introduction (a summary), key points
of the thesis work, methods of solving the problem, reference documents,
research results and the conclusion.
First draft of the dissertation should be finished one month before
the end of the schooling, and after it being checked and approved
by the tutor, the department will then organize an evaluation and
an oral defense.
The process of thesis oral defense refers to “Detailed rules and
regulations of graduate students’ dissertation oral defense and
application for the degree in Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
VIII. Thesis publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific
paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University ".
