| Based on city planning and landscape architectural designing,
this specialty deals with the research of new theories, new approaches
and new technologies relating to city planning, city designing, landscape
architectural designing, city transportation planning, and scenic
garden planning and designing. It also takes an active part in social
practices, taking in hand national and provincial design and research
of significant projects. It includes a special laboratory, which occupies
an area of more than 480 sq meters, nearly a hundred of large equipments,
a large working station, GIS platform and other advanced lab apparatuses.
In these years, it takes and accomplishes a number of provincial and
urban designs and research of significant projects and many research
tasks. In addition, it has fruitful researching accomplishment. It
has about 80 papers and several monographs published in academic publications.
I. Training Objectives
This specialty puts great emphasis upon systematic study of basic
theories and training of originality in project designing. Masters
of the specialty have well-knit basic knowledge of city planning,
strong ability of independently analyzing and solving problems in
projects, vigorous creativity in planning and nice comprehensive
abilities. They are qualified in the fields of city planning, city
designing, landscape architectural designing, architectural environment
designing and also have abilities of planning and theoretical research
as well as a excellent mastery of English reading and writing.

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.
Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can
be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam
once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and
grades in course study meets demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of engineering master degree candidates should
be finished before the end of the third term (at the latest the
fourth term after in months).
Requirements:
1. Persuasive argumentation, which is in the direction of advanced
architectural designing.
2. The content must involve the meaning of the project, the assessment
of researching achievement, the analysis of feasibility, the steps
of practical work, the arrangements of all stages of research and
detailed approaches.
The opening report must be verified by 3-5 professors or associate
professors organized by this department.
The reading amount of documents is no less than thirty-six, including
one-third of the foreign academic papers.
VII. Academic Dissertation
The academic dissertation must be carried out strictly according
to the relevant regulations of the university. The research work
of the thesis should innovate to some extent on the basis of the
former research. Theoretical thesis should have the quality of being
published. Designing thesis should work closely the concrete problems
in the actual engineering. The thesis must have a topic, a catalogue,
an introduction (a summary), key points of the thesis work, methods
of solving the problem, reference documents, research results and
the conclusion.
First draft of the dissertation should be finished one month before
the end of the schooling, and after it being checked and approved
by the tutor, the department will then organize an evaluation and
an oral defense.
The process of thesis oral defense refers to “Detailed rules
and regulations of graduate students’ dissertation oral defense
and application for the degree in Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
VIII. Thesis publishing
