| The specialty is one of the earliest authorized centers for doctors
in our country, and was elected as a state key specialty in 2002;
it is subordinate to the first grade specialty of "shipping and
ocean engineering ". As a unit authorized to award doctorates
of first grade specialties, it also has mobile stations for the post-doctors.
The specialty was established over half a century ago. After
its catalogue has been adjusted, two national key specialties--the
naval architecture and ocean engineering hydrodynamics mechanics,
and the naval architecture and ocean engineering structural mechanics
-- are merged into the same specialty, which contributed to present
scale and pattern.
Now there is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
and Chinese Academy of Engineering, thirteen doctoral supervisors,
and two Changjiang River scholars in the department. And there are
ten professors who work in international authoritative academic
organizations. There is a state key laboratory --The state key laboratory
of the ocean engineering .The experimental condition and achievements
of the specialty have already reached the world level.
The specialty is mainly engaged in new-type naval architecture
and ocean engineering structure, designing and developing of the
undersea diving device. Its main research fields are as follows:
Intensity, fatigue, damages, vibration and structure dependability
of naval and ocean structure; Naval and ocean water dynamics engineering;
Shipping obstruction, advances, handling and able to bear waves,
etc. Some research results have already reached the world level.
I. Training Objectives
The degree winners should possess a solid theoretical foundation
and the systematic specialized knowledge of hydrodynamics, structural
mechanics, and naval architecture and ocean engineering. They have
the ability to analyze and solve problems independently, and to
take the task of working on some major theoretical and experimental
research or engineering design by their own.
II. Directions of the Specialty
1. Developing of new-type naval and ocean structures
2. Advanced manufacturing technology of naval and ocean structure
3. Comprehensive technical research of system engineering under
water
4. Structure optimization design and dependability of naval and
ocean structure
5. Modern analyzing theory and technology of naval and ocean structure
6. Research on the fatigue ruptures, the collides damage and the
limit intensity of ocean structure
7. Research on the environmental load, the movement respond, and
the fluid and solid combination of naval and ocean structure
8. Research on fluid motive performance of naval and ocean structure.
III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.
Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can
be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Engineering master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round
exam once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits
and grades in course study meet demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. And after entering
this stage, they should submit a brief summary of their half-a year
work to their guide teacher by the end of each term, reporting the
progress of the thesis within the range of the specialty.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of engineering master degree candidates should
be finished before the end of the third term (at the latest the
fourth term after in months). The reading amount of documents is
no less than fifty. At the last period of their opening report,
they must have their oral defense at a public lecture participated
by experts of the specialty or the relevant specialties.
VII. Academic Dissertation
Refers to the regulations about academic dissertation of the university.
VIII. Thesis Publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific
paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University ".
