The specialty was developed from the original shipping structure
mechanics. It was renamed as engineering mechanics after being adjusted
in 1998. Being a state key specialty, it was established in 1960,
and began to recruit graduate students in 1965. It is one of the earliest
specialties who had the right to award master and doctorate degrees,
and it is among the key construction units of the "211 Projects"
of the country. Its subordinate large-scale structure experimental
laboratory is equipped with flash spotting, electrical logging, vibration,
and a structure power of computer control, in addition to fatigue
testing equipment and swaying testing equipment ,etc. Now there are
four doctoral supervisors, two of whom are technological committee
members of International Ship & Offshore Structure Congress (ISSC),
the most authoritative organization of shipping structural mechanics
in the world.
The specialty is mainly engaged in research on mechanics performance
and design method of various kinds of engineering structures. The
fields involved include such respects as naval architecture and ocean
engineering, aviation and space, civil engineering, automobile, machinery
and other respects of communications and transportation. It has achieved
many state and ministerial prizes of great scientific research results,
and its research work has already been in the front of engineering
mechanics and reaches the international advanced level. Graduate students
of this specialty are mainly engaged in scientific research and teaching
in scientific institutions and universities all over the world, among
them a lot of people have already become worldwide famous scholars.
I. Training Objectives
The degree winners should possess mathematics, mechanics, physics
and relevant theoretical foundations and systematical specialized
knowledge. They know well about the current situation and the developing
direction of the specialty. They have a tentative ability of setting
up correct mechanics-mathematics models of the complicated research
objects, using proficiently various kinds of analytical methods,
numerical computing and experimental methods. They are supposed
to grasp a foreign language comparatively skillfully, and can read
specialized materials and write thesis in foreign language. Besides,
they can undertake the task of some major theoretical and experimental
research or engineering design independently.
II. Directions of the Specialty
1. Theory and application of computational dynamics of structures
2. Modeling and security analysis of complicated structures
3. Experimental technique and theory of structures
4. Structure fatigue, rupture and stability
5. Structure dynamics
6. Abating and control of vibration
7. Structure mechanics of compound materials
8. Limit bearing capacity of structures
III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.

V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam
once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and
grades in course study meet demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution.
After entering this stage, master degree candidates should submit
a brief summary of their half-a year work to their guide teacher
by the end of each term, reporting the progress of the thesis within
the range of the specialty.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished
before the end of the third term (at the latest the fourth term
after in months). The reading amount of documents is no less than
fifty. At the last period of their opening report, they must have
their oral defense at a public lecture participated by experts of
the specialty or the relevant specialties.
VII. Academic Dissertation
Refers to the regulations about academic dissertation of the university.
VIII. Thesis Publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific
paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University ".
