The specialty began to recruit the Master degree candidates in 1979, and began to recruit doctors in 1985. It has the right to award master and doctorate degrees, and it set up the mobile station for the post-doctors in 1995. Its teaching and scientific research makes a remarkable achievement. It is one of the domestic famous teaching research units.

The specialty pays attention to the development of theoretical foundation, engineering application and cross specialties of general mechanic. It correlates closely the front of present specialty with relevant national economic projects, and makes deep theoretical, computing and experimental research on respects such as multi-body system dynamics, dynamics of fluid-filled system, nonlinear dynamics, rotor dynamics, vibration theory, etc. Great achievements have already been made in dynamics and computer-aided analysis in fields such as spacecraft, vehicle, robot, rotor dynamics, and sports. The specialty has been awarded many prizes in science and technologies by State Natural Science , Ministry of Education , Ministry of Aeronautics and Astronautics , State Physical Culture and Sports Commission, etc. There are four professors and five associate professors available at present.

The specialty is equipped with a general mechanics laboratory, float testing platforms, laser dynamic testing equipments, vibration and striking testing equipments, etc. It is also equipped with an artificial dynamics centre, and large-scale engineering FEM analyzing software such as MSC (Patran, Nastran, unless Dytran, Marc,Fatigue), Dets and Adams, etc. It provides graduate students with a fine experimental and computing condition.

  I. Training Objectives
To cultivate advanced all-round scientific research talents who are developing-- morally, intelligently and physically; these talents possess a solid foundation of specialized theory and computing technology; possess the basic ability of developing dynamics and controlling computer-aided analyzing software; possess the ability of using general software or basic theories to solve the practical engineering problem. They all have a healthy body and are willing to devote themselves into science and the cause of social modernization.

  II. Main Research Directions
  1. Dynamics and controlling computer aided analysis
  2. Dynamics and control of multi-body system
  3. Dynamics and control of fluid-filled system
  4. Nonlinear dynamics
  5. Theory of vibration and rotor dynamics

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is 2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least; among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19. Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

  V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and grades in course study meet demands, by which to determine whether they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution. Pursue the master degree largely and richly in succession
After entering this stage, master degree candidates should submit a brief summary of their half-a year work to their guide teacher by the end of each term, reporting the progress of the thesis within the range of the specialty.

  VI. Opening Report
The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished before the end of the third term (at the latest the fourth term after in months). The reading amount of documents is no less than fifty.
At the last period of their opening report, they must have their oral defense at a public lecture participated by experts of the specialty or the relevant specialties.

  VII. Academic Dissertation
Refers to the regulations about academic dissertation of the university.

  VIII. Thesis Publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University ".
