This specialty now has an academician, four professors, eight associate professors and senior engineers, and four lecturers and engineers. The specialty has a research institute for geotechnical mechanics and geotechnical engineering, in which there is a rock mechanics laboratory, a soil mechanics laboratory, a mechanics laboratory, and a field testing laboratory. In recent years, this specialty has achieved a series of important scientific findings in such projects as Natural Science Fund of the State, Special Fund of the State Education Commission, etc., and many theses have been published.

  I. Training Objectives
The degree winners should have solid basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering, and know quite well about the developing direction of geotechnical mechanics and engineering. They have the specialized knowledge of geotechnical engineering, and have the ability of experimental research and theoretical analysis so that they can correlate with practical problems relating to the specialty and make innovative research. They are able to consult specialized books and periodicals of this specialty in foreign language as well as write the thesis summary.

  II. Main Research Directions
1、Basic theory and method in deformation observation
2、Deformation and bearing mechanism of pile foundation
  3、Deep excavation and slope stability
  4、Numerical analysis of geotechnical engineering
5、Experiment and theory in damage and evolution of rock mass
6、Numerical simulation of rock mass initial stress field
  7、Dynamic stability of underground structure

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time master degree candidates’ length of schooling is 2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least; among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19. Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

  V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and grades in course study meets demands, by which to determine whether they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details refer to the relevant regulations of the graduate institution.

  VI. Opening Report
The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished before the end of the third term (at the latest the fourth term after in months), which gives an evaluation on the range, meaning, value, contents, approaches and conditions of the research subject. The opening report must be verified by 3-5 professors or associate professors organized by this department. The reading amount of documents is no less than twenty.

  VII. Academic Dissertation
Master's academic dissertation must be finished independently by graduate students under the guidance of the tutor. The academic dissertation requires a clear concept, a proper argument, a rigorous analysis, correct calculations, reliable data, terse sentences and clear charts, all of which reflects the solid theoretical foundation, the stronger independent working ability and fine style of study that the graduate students have. The full text is generally no less than 30,000 words.
First draft of the dissertation should be finished one month before the end of the schooling, and after it being checked and approved by the tutor, the department will then organize an evaluation and an oral defense.

  VIII. Thesis publishing
Publishing of the thesis refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
