| Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering is developed from
the research center of water conservancy project which was established
in 1985. It was authorized to be the master station by the academic
degrees committee of the State Council in 2000. In 1988, naval architecture
and ocean engineering structure mechanics and hydrodynamics were chosen
as two key specialties of national institution of higher education.
Its first grade specialty has already set up the center for post-doctoral
studies. It is one of the specialties which have been laid stress
upon by the "211 Projects" of our school. The specialty
is engaged in offshore structure design and the experimental study
on the movement mechanism of offshore structure and harbor waterways
and coast engineering. Its main research field is as follows: Design
and research of the developing platform of sea oil and offshore
engineering structure that are suitable for different sea areas;
Coastal estuary dynamics; Coastal estuary evolution, dredging and
planning of harbor waterways, and environmental protection of coastal
estuary; harbor waterways engineering, shallows, innings and wave-
preventing buildings; Economic management of the coastal engineering.
Some research results have already reached the world level.
The specialty enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad for
its great numbers of teachers, advanced and completes equipment,
distinguished research results, and its outstanding teaching quality.
There are three professors, four associate professors and three
lecturers at present. There are also a national key laboratory of
ocean engineering, an experimental centre (teaching and scientific
research base) of deep waterways of the entrance of Changjiang River,
wind wave flumes, and a CAD computer center.
I. Training Objectives
The degree achievers should possess the solid basic theory and
systematical specialized knowledge. They have the ability of practical
research, theoretical analysis and computer technology. They can
correlate relevant practical problems in their study to make scientific
research or to take charge of the technological engineering work,
and achieve innovative research results. They also grasp a foreign
language comparatively skillfully.
II. Research Directions
1. Offshore structure design and the experimental study of its
movement mechanism
2. Harbor waterways and coastal engineering
3. Numerical simulator study of estuarine and coastal dynamics
III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.
Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can
be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam
once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and
grades in course study meet demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished
before the end of the third terms (at the latest the fourth term after
in months). The reading amount of documents is no less than twenty.
VII. Academic Dissertation
The details of academic dissertation refer to the relevant regulations
of the university.
VIII. Thesis Publishing
Refers to “Requirement for graduate students of publishing scientific
paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong University
