The specialty was established in 1956, and began to recruit graduate students in1960. It is one of the earliest specialties in our country which have been authorized to award the master's degree, and it has been given doctorate gift in 1998. Based on machinery, engineering heating physics and control theory, this specialty deals with the designing, studying, and developing of power plant performance, essential parts and control system by means of modern analysis and experimental techniques.

The laboratory of the specialty has many experimental platforms which are for various special-purposes such as the diesel engine, the transmission equipment, the hydraulic coupling machine, the separation of air and water, the purification of air, etc. The laboratory is also equipped with parameter monitors of machinery and heating power, artificial equipment of monolithic processor, programmable controller, digital artificial machine of high performance, and the monitoring system, etc.

In recent years, the specialty has launched a series of research on subjects such as the control and emulation of diesel engine power plant, the modeling and emulation of transmission equipment’s dynamic performance, and the air water separation technology of shipping gas turbine, etc. Its scientific findings have won many prizes in Advanced Science and Technology both of Shanghai and of the country.

  I. Training Objectives
The master's degree winners should have a solid theoretical foundation in marine engine engineering as well as systematical specialized knowledge of shipping power plant. They know well about the developing direction of the specialty, and can use computers skillfully to carry on scientific calculations and emulation analysis. They also have the studying, developing, designing and managing ability in the field of marine engine engineering.

  II. Directions of the Specialty
  1. Power plant and its optimizing
   2. New-type power transmission and controlling
   3. Trouble diagnosis of power plant
   4. Shipping main engine and special machinery
   5. Modern technology of electromechanical control
  6. Environmental protection technology of power plant

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is 2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least; among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19. Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.
