Program ‖Structure Engineering
This specialty has seven professors and more than ten associate
professors now. Based on engineering mathematics, structural mechanics
and computer technology, the specialty makes research on structure
theory of civil engineering, water conservancy engineering and mine
engineering as well as some problems relating to it. Its main research
fields including theory and application of structure engineering,
numerical calculation of complex structure, application of computer
in structure engineering, underground engineering structure, and technology
of civil, water conservancy and mine construction. Now there are four
laboratories (geotechnical engineering, structure engineering, material,
measuring and mechanics), with a total construction area of 2000 square
meters. The laboratories are equipped with experimental facilities
such as triaxial apparatus, series total station, multichannel data
gathering apparatus, material testing machine, and electric direct-shear
apparatus, etc. The specialty has undertaken and accomplished 131
national, provincial and ministerial, regional, Shanghai and horizontal
cooperative scientific research subjects since 1986. It has obtained
four ministerial awards of progressive scientific research, published
six monographs, and has 184 theses issued on authoritative publications
at home and abroad, among them forty-four EI search theses and seventeen

I. Training Objectives
The specialty puts emphasis on fostering students’ ability in basic
theory learning and computer application. The degree winners have
a broad specialized knowledge, the ability of solving problems independently
as well as a strong consciousness of renewal of knowledge. They can
be engaged in fields such as management and administration. With a
good scientific research quality, they are able to adapt themselves
to the developing technology of structure engineering under new situation.

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time master degree candidates’ length of schooling is 2.
5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19. Semi-sabbatical
master degree candidates’ period of schooling can be prolonged for
another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round exam
once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits and
grades in course study meets demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduate institution.
VI. Opening Report
Time:The opening report of master degree candidates should be finished
before the end of the third term.
Requirements: Persuasive argumentation, which is in the direction
of advanced structure engineering; The content must involve the meaning
of the project, the assessment of researching achievement, the analysis
of feasibility, the steps of practical work, the arrangements of all
stages of research and detailed approaches.
Formality: Open oral defense
Academic papers reading:The reading amount of documents is no less
than twenty-five, including one-third of the foreign academic papers.
VII. Academic Dissertation
The academic dissertation must be carried out strictly according
to the relevant regulations of the university. The research work of
the thesis should innovate to some extent on the basis of the former
research. Theoretical thesis should have the quality of being published.
Designing thesis should work closely the concrete problems in the
actual engineering. The thesis must have a topic, a catalogue, an
introduction (a summary), key points of the thesis work, methods of
solving the problem, reference documents, research results and the
conclusion.
The oral defense of the dissertation refers to “Detailed rules and
regulations of graduate students’ dissertation oral defense and application
for the degree in Shanghai Jiaotong University”.
VIII. Thesis publishing
Publishing of the thesis refers to “Requirement for graduate students
of publishing scientific paper during learning at Shanghai Jiaotong
University”.
