| This specialty begins in 1958, belonging to 1st grade subject
in the specialty of Ship and ocean engineering. It was authorized
to give doctor and master degrees to its researchers in 1998.The specialty
is supported by the national pivot lab of vibration, impingement and
noise, obtaining international-standard equipments including high-capability
computer working station, complete vibration and acoustic test system
and analytic system, the system measuring intermediate frequency of
water sound under high and static water pressure as well as small
measuring apparatus of underwater sound in pool and other acoustic
measuring devices. In these years, the specialty takes in hand the
researches of vital projects listed in National Nature and Science
Fund and National Defense and Scientific Research Projects and wins
a lot of achievement includes Scientific Progressing Award beyond
departmental level.
This specialty has now 3 doctor tutors (one of whom is pluralistic),
and 2 master tutors.
The researchers of this specialty mainly undertake the work of
teaching, researching and high-tech R&E in universities and
research institutions.
I. Training Objectives
The specialty aims at training talents in the underwater acoustic
researching work in acoustics, vibration and signal disposal. Doctors
and masters should have a mastery of deep-founded theoretical knowledge
of basic acoustics and vibration, clearly understand the characteristics
and developing directions of underwater acoustics, and have the
ability of basically researching underwater acoustic engineering
and its practical application. Through the study of master’s course
and the training of writing study papers, they should have the independent
ability in theoretical and practical work. They should find creative
solution to the practical problems relating to this subject.

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
The full-time Master degree candidates’ length of schooling is
2. 5 years. The total credits must get requested 32 credits at least;
among them the credits of degree lessons must get requested 19.
Semi-sabbatical master degree candidates’ period of schooling can
be prolonged for another half a year or one year as approved.

V. Middle Examinations
Engineering master degree candidates are supposed to have an all-round
exam once a month in the fourth term to check whether their credits
and grades in course study meet demands, by which to determine whether
they can enter the stage of the academic dissertation. Its details
refer to the relevant regulations of the graduates’ institution.
VI. Opening Report
The opening report of engineering master degree candidates should
be finished before the end of the third term (at the latest the
fourth term after in months). An argumentation should be held on
the range, meaning, value, contents, approaches and subject conditions
of the research. And the department will organize three to five
professors or associate professors to verify the argumentation.
The reading amount of documents is no less than twenty.
