I. Guideline

1. This program embodies the Party’s education guidelines and the spirit of “Gear education to the needs of modernization, the world and the future”. Positively adapt our students to the requirement of current society, develop them in an in an all-round way-morally, intellectually and physically, and turn more and more students into the successors to the cause of socialism. Adhere to the ideology and basic disciplines of this specialty, and decide its developing direction and talent-cultivating mode. Based on the general requirements of undergraduate education, we stress on cultivating students’ creativity and innovation abilities, break the specialty boundary, and turn each student into a useful person.

2. Carry forward the glorious tradition of Shanghai Jiaotong University, take advantage of Shanghai’s location and regional culture identity, grasp the opportunity of the time, and build this specialty at a higher level, with a faster speed and a more rational attitude.

Ⅱ. Length of Schooling
Duration: Five years

Ⅲ. Educational Goal
Develop our students in an all-round way-morally, intellectually and physically and meet students with the development requirement of modern society. Give them the basic training of an architect and turn them into advanced architects.

Ⅳ. Basic Requirement
Develop student’s moral, intellectuality, and physique balancedly and develop their knowledge, ability and quality harmoniously.
1. Moral: As the maintainer of the cause of socialism and the human beings habitation, on the one hand, architects are necessary to receive moral-elevating courses which are contained in the education schedule, such as the theory of Mao Zedong, Den Xiaoping, Jiang Zeming and other revolutionists of the old generation; on the other hand, architects need to acquaint with the development of world history and contemporary philosophy, carry forward Chinese glorious traditional culture by learning Chinese classic literature, ethnic, interpersonal relationship, and the relationship between human beings and nature.

2. Intellectuality: To the requirement of a generalist and specialist, on the one hand, architects need to master the knowledge and skills of architectures; on the other hand, architects need to acquaint with traditions and regularities of other disciplines, such as the science history. They need to know special knowledge of parallel specialties, such as Physics, Environmental Science and Modern Biology, and also need to acquaint with the general analyzing methods of intersecting specialties, such as System Controlling Theory, and Symbolic Logic, etc.

3. Physique: Architectures is a labor-intensified profession. It requires a healthy and strong physical condition, thus, the physical education courses and other occupational disease preventing activities are absolutely necessarily.

4. Beauty: Aesthetic Education is the basic requirement of education, and the objective requirement of Socialist cultural and ideological progress. As the designer and erector of people’s basic living environment, the aesthetic education of Architectures is a necessary part. The settings of Art, Literature, Music and other courses are not only because they are necessary to Architectures, but also because of its close similarity with Architecture in thinking manners and ideology.

5. Knowledge, Ability and Quality: As an amalgamation course of Liberal art and Engineering, Architecture has a more delicate requirement to the harmony of knowledge, ability and quality. This program is endeavored to organize and harmonize the understanding of knowledge, gaining of ability and developing of quality in a more rational, consanguineous and systematic way.

Ⅵ. Curriculum System
There are five serials of courses in this program. Their relations with knowledge, ability, and quality are as follows:

In order to stress the integration of curriculums, all the courses are classified into four modes: General Education Course, Fundamental Disciplines, Frontiers and Characters of Architectures. The hours distributed in the four modes are as follows:

Ⅷ. Curriculum System
Main systems of courses: Humanities and General Education, Fundamental of Design and Art, Fundamental Disciplines and Theory, Design & Practice of Architectures. Main courses are: Building Mechanics, Basic Course of Design, Fundamentals of Fine Arts, Architecture Design, Building Design, Building Structure and Design, World History of Architectures, Building Environment, Construction Equipment, Construction and Organization Technology and Designing Practice.
The elective course of specialty frontiers is Theory of Architectures, which is designed and controlled by professional teachers.

Ⅸ. Experiment and Practicing
1. There are three computer courses. In order to make full use of the university’s resources and pop out practicing education, the operating hours on computer has reached 36 hours.
2. The duration of specialty English education is two years. Stress on applications of the language and prepare for the specialized courses which are taught in English.
3. There are 47 weeks’ practices in this program, among which 42 weeks are for extra-curriculum training practice and another 5 weeks are for social practice.

Ⅹ. About Graduation
After students gain 260 or more credits, which contain 228 credits of compulsory courses and practices, they are eligible to graduate from this specialty.
