Ⅰ. Guideline
1. “Gear education to the needs of modernization, the world and
the future.” Adapt to the development requirement of contemporary
society, economy, science, technique for high educated people. The
twenty-first century is the ocean’s century, and Shanghai is to
be the International shipping center. We are aimed to grasp the
opportunity and cultivate competent people for the construction
of harbor, waterway and coastal engineering.
2. The education mode of the School was turned from mere knowledge
teaching to creative spirit and operating ability cultivating.
3. Teaching should break the limitations of traditional curriculum
settings, and embody the distinct inter-disciplinary characters
of the development of contemporary science and technology. This
specialty is an intersection of Ship & Ocean Engineering and
hydraulics Engineering.
4. Stress on personality education and creativity cultivation.
5. Intensify engineering practice at a general concept, including
design, manufacture, management, finance and market.
Ⅱ. Educational Goal
Develop our students in an all-round way-morally, intellectually
and physically, together with a profound specialized knowledge and
a wide range of other knowledge, meeting students with the development
requirement of modern society. Equip our students with programming,
designing, operating and managing skills of Harbor Engineering,
Waterway Engineering and Coastal Engineering, which are necessary
to engage in expletory department and other departments of Traffic
hydraulics coast.
Ⅲ. Main Requirements
After four year’s systemic learning and training, graduates should
bear knowledge and abilities as following:
1. Know well of the fundamental knowledge in natural science, have
basic knowledge about humanities, art and social science, and proficient
in writing scientific research thesis (or reports).
2. Systematically master the elemental theories and knowledge in
Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering area.
3. Have basic skills of engaging in this industry, such as drafting,
accounting, testing, information searching and other necessary skills.
Have good knowledge of computer and foreign language application
abilities.
4. Possess profound specific knowledge of either specialty of the
Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering area. Be aware of
the frontier and development of the specialty.
5. Possess strong sense of independent study, creating initiative
and team work spirit and possess a high overall quality.
Ⅳ. Length of Schooling and Degree:
Duration: 4-year undergraduate
Degree awarded: B.E. (Bachelor of Engineer)
Ⅴ. Curriculum System
The whole curriculum system is made up of four courses modes and
practicing periods.
1. Humanity, social science, economic and management courses mode
Politic Theory courses: Altogether 213 hours among which 151 are
class hours and the rest is the practicing period.
Military Theory courses: 18 class hours plus military training period.
Fundamentals of Law: Altogether 36 hours among which 27 are class
hours and the rest is the practicing period.
Economic and Management courses: Elective courses of 4 or more credits.
(Engineering economy & applications and Basic Management are
of top-priority.)
Humanity and literary courses: Elective courses of 6 credits or
above.
2. Public basic courses mode
According to the university’s requirement of public basic courses
for science students, we designed courses of high applications,
such as Mathematics, Physics, Foreign languages and computer science.
Mathematic courses are made up of compulsory courses and optional
courses. Advanced Mathematics (10 credits), Linear Algebra (3 credits)
and Probability Statistics (2.5 credits) are compulsory courses.
In addition to that, another 1 credit of mathematic courses is elective.
(Mathematic Experiment and Mathematic Model are of top-priority.)
According to relative rules of our university, foreign languages,
computer science and physical education are of target management.
Foreign languages: 12 credits of fundamental English by passing
CET-4 plus 4 credits of elective Intensive General English Courses.
This Department also designed 72 hours of Specialized Courses by
English. We have uniform computer courses except Basic Computer
Science. Compulsory physical education courses are of 8 credits,
another 2 credits are elective courses.
In addition to the compulsory courses, each student still has to
choose elective natural science courses of 2 or more credits, (We
advise “Chemistry (2.5 credits) + Chemistry Experiment”) and a introduction
course to other specialty (2 credits).
3. Basic Disciplines Courses mode
In this mode, there are twelve compulsory courses, among which eight
courses are Fundamental Mechanics and specialty related mechanics
courses (25.5 credits). Other compulsory fundamental courses are
Engineering Drafting, Engineering Measuring and Principal and Structure
of Naval (this three altogether are of 7.5 credits), and Reinforced
Concrete Structure (3 credits). There are six elective courses of
fundamental principles, from which students have to choose courses
of 7.5 or more credits. (Computer and experiments kinds are of high-priority).
There are four Cross-disciplinary courses, from which students have
to choose courses of 4~ 8 credits.
4. Frontier of this Specialty and distinguished courses mode
In this mode, there are five compulsory courses (18.5 credits),
among which 10 credits are class courses and the rest is for five
weeks’ course design. In this mode, there are also four elective
courses and one week’s course design, from which students have to
choose courses of 5 or more credits.
5. Practicing Period
Besides the experiments and practices in the above four modes, students
still have to take part in Military Training for two weeks (3 credits),
and also Industrial Practice, Measuring Practice and Specialty Practice,
which are altogether nine weeks, 13.5 credits. In the end, students
have to finish eighteen weeks’ Undergraduate Project (Thesis), pass
the Thesis Oral Defense, and gain 27 credits of this course.
Ⅵ. Main courses
Mathematics; Mechanics; Engineering Hydraulics; Harbor, Waterway
and Coast Engineering; Model Experiment and Numerical Simulation
in Coastal Engineering
Ⅶ. Practicing Arrangement
1. Experiment
We arranged 185 hours of experiment, including Physic Lab., Chemistry
Lab., Modern Structure Lab., Electricity and Electronics Lab. These
four lab courses are altogether 135 hours.
2. Practice
Industrial Practice: four weeks; mainly the Metalworking Practice
Measuring Practice: two weeks; mainly the Engineering Measuring
Engineering Internship: three weeks; mainly contrast and analyze
the different kinds of ship yards with the purpose of understand
better of the knowledge of Harbor, Waterway and Coastal Engineering.
3. Practice on Computer
This practice contains 252 hours.
4. Course Exercise
There are five course exercises for six weeks. They are: deign a
wharf related to Harbor Marine Structures, design a high-pile wharf
related to Calculation of Design on Structure of Harbor Engineering,
design a physical model of estuary, coastal engineering related to
Model Experiment and Numerical Simulation in Coastal Engineering,
design a waterway related to Waterway Dredging of Navigating Channel,
design a ichnography of a port related to Port Planning & Arrangement.
5. Undergraduate Project
Undergraduate Project (Thesis) must be related to the real situation
of engineering. And the load and quality of the project will be
evaluated according to related documents.
6. Out Class Practice
Out class practice is compulsory. Students must gain 4 or more credits
in this practice. The specified items are as following:
(1) Take part in social investigation and social practice and submit
study paper or report. After the positive evaluation from the education
committee, students are able to gain their credits (1~2 credits).
(2) Take part in science research. Students who publish an article
in international magazines or conferences can gain 5 credits, in
domestic magazines can gain 3 credits, and in domestic conference
can gain 2 credits. Students who finish their research reports can
gain 1 credit. (must be applied by their advisors)
(3) Take part in explorations or innovations of science and technology
