Programme Overview:

In the past decade, Shanghai has experienced incredible growth in both its economy and infrastructure construction. With the population reaching 25 million and GDP reaching US$450 billion, Shanghai has received nearly US$81billion investment in infrastructure and buildings in 2017. With those figures rising, Shanghai has set key strategies for its urban development over the next 30 years, which includes innovation, internationalisation, urban renewal, smart city planning, sustainable development and resilience.






Under such a backdrop, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), together with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), will hold the 2019 Civil Engineering Global Summer School Programme, “China’s Sustainable Development in Infrastructure - Green City and Green Future”. This course provides an excellent opportunity for international students to learn about sustainable development in Shanghai and the nearby cities. The programme covers a wide range of activities, including: seminars on frontier technology in sustainable construction; site visits to award winning projects; office visits to global companies and networking opportunities with subject experts, ICE members and local students. Student delegates will also be able to access world class laboratories in maritime, civil and energy engineering at SJTU.  



In addition, local excursions, cultural activities and field trips are also available, allowing students to learn more about Chinese culture, history and the latest economic and social developments in China.


Programme Description

The programme is delivered through the medium of English and aims to provide students with an overall understanding of the environmental and resource implications of the development in urban infrastructure within the context of sustainability. It considers how modern urban development reacts to climate impact and how through design, planners and designers can mitigate those effects. It also considers the theoretical and methodological basis of approaches to justify various choices made at different stages of urban development. On the practical side and through several visits to exemplar projects and engagement in hands-on activities, the course introduces students to state-of-the-art green technologies and tools that may contribute to sustainable development.

The programme is open to university students from varying backgrounds and stages of study. A broad course coverage is designed and embedded in a project-based exercise. Multiple novel delivery methods will be employed including specialist seminars, technical visits, work exhibitions and interactive debates with professionals. Experience has proven that this type of project-based delivery method has significantly assisted students in understanding of the key issues around the main subject.

In order to enhance and enrich students’ learning experience during the course, a Buddy Scheme will be arranged where each student delegate will be allocated a local student who will act as their buddy. Buddies will provide assistance with both studying and living in Shanghai.


Programme Highlights

 A visit to the world’s second highest building; the highest LEED platinum project, the Shanghai Tower located in Shanghai.

 A visit to the world’s first 3D-printed building.

 The opportunity to interview the project management team of the Shanghai Disney Project, one of the world’s most complicated projects.

 Site visits including off-site construction projects and award-winning green building projects.

 Tours of Shanghai city together with a visit to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre.

 The experience of working on a real-life global project mentored with the practitioners of a global consultancy company in Shanghai.

 Networking activities with the students/graduates/chartered members of ICE and local practitioners.


Application Eligibility: 

(1) Students from outside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student prior to applying for this programme.

(2) Students whose first language is not English should provide an English language proficiency certificate, namely, either IELTS (no less than 6.0), TOEFL (no less than 79 points), or TOEIC (no less than 800 points).

(3) Engineering background is preferable; other subject backgrounds may also be considered.

The following items must be uploaded to the online application:

• A scan of the ID page in the student’s passport. The passport must be valid for at least six months for the visa application.

• ID photosimilar to a passport photo

• Curriculum vitae (CV)

• Personal statement explaining the motivation for attending the course

• Language proficiency certificate (if applicable)



1) The waiving of fees may apply for applicants who are studying in SJTU’s exchange partner universities or those who have industrial sponsors. Please contact the International Office of your home university or your industrial sponsor for further information.

2) Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.


Key dates:

• Applications open in February 2019 and will close on 29 April 2019 in order to allow sufficient application time for a Chinese visa.

• Applicants will receive emails confirming whether their applications have been successful in early June.

• 11 July 2019:            Arrival, registration and dormitory check-in, meeting local buddies

• 12 July 2019:            Welcome reception organised by the university

• 13 - 14 July 2019:     Local excursion organised by the university

• 15 - 26 July 2019:    Course (see programme below)

• 27 July 2019:            Dormitory check-out


Fees: (Exchange rate as at 28 February 2019)

· Application fee: RMB 400 (GBP £45 / US $60)

· Tuition fee:        RMB 5000 (GBP £562 / US $748)

· Total:                 RMB 5400 (GBP £607 / US $808)


(1) Payment can be made through and the deadline is 29/05/2019.

(2) The weekend culture trip fee is not included in the tuition fee.

(3) The application fee is not refundable.

(4) Cancellation before 29/05/2019 full refund for tuition fee; by 13/07/2019 50% refund; after 13/07/2019 no refund. (All cancellation requests must be sent to )


The programme will be mainly based at the Xuhui campus of SJTU. Attendees are able to choose on-campus or off-campus accommodation. For on-campus accommodation, room reservations should be made online at and the accommodation fee will be paid online. The on-campus single room is RMB 110-130/day, the on-campus 2-person shared room is RMB 60-70/day. Most of the on-campus accommodations are ensuite. Due to the on-campus accommodation being limited, students can also choose to use off-campus accommodation. The off-campus accommodation cost will be around 120 – 300 RMB/day depending on condition and location. More detailed information regarding accommodation will be released once you have been admitted to the programme.

SJTU will provide students with a JW 202 form and admission notice. Applicants should bring the visa paperwork, admission notice, JW 202 form and a valid passport to their local Chinese embassy or consulate to apply for a short-term student visa (usually the visa type “X2”). Those who are already resident in China need to submit a copy of the visa page, residence registration notice, and all the above application documents to the PSB in Shanghai after registering at SJTU. The JW 202 form and the admission notice will be sent to the applicant via an international courier within two weeks after 29 April, 2019.

Note: If you are a local student from Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan, you do not need the JW202 form.


Travel and insurance:

Students who take part in this programme will need to arrange their own travel (including transfers) to Shanghai and their own travel insurance prior to travelling to China. Each student will then need to present the insurance certificate to the administrative staff on the day of registration.



• Course participants can earn two credits (20 credit hours) on successfully passing the assessment (group presentation).

• Official transcripts will be sent out in September 2019 to the mailing address indicated in the application.

• Students who wish to transfer credits need to obtain pre-approval from the relevant office at their home universities.
